How to plan an exterior house clean.

“Clean the outside” can mean very different things from one home to the next. A short walk around your property helps turn that broad request into a list you can discuss and prioritise.

The short version

List each surface, the marks you want assessed, and any access limits. House siding, paving, glass and roofing need separate consideration; the strongest quote explains what will be cleaned and what results are realistic.

Make a list by area.

Start with the places that matter most to you: the front approach, house siding, the driveway, or the patio where you sit. Keep each area separate so it is clear what you want considered.

You don’t need to choose equipment or a washing method. Different materials and conditions need assessment; describing the surface is more useful than prescribing how it should be cleaned.

Soft washing or pressure washing?

These are useful terms to ask about, but choosing one is not a substitute for inspecting the material. House siding, concrete, paving and glass are not interchangeable. Existing coatings and the condition of the surface matter as well.

Beam’s uses soft washing for siding and assesses hard surfaces for the appropriate cleaning approach. An exterior-washing request should not quietly include roof cleaning: asphalt shingles need their own assessment and are not a pressure-washing surface in our service.

Point out the things a wide photo misses.

One photo of the whole area and a closer view of a mark can tell different parts of the story. Only take photos from places you can safely reach on foot.

  • Note the material if you know it: concrete, paving, siding or another surface.
  • Mention damaged or loose areas you have already noticed.
  • Describe the marks you want assessed, including any known spills.
  • Include access details such as stairs, gates or a narrow passage.

Include access and nearby belongings.

A lakeside patio reached by steps, a driveway with limited parking and siding behind a locked gate each need a different access conversation. Describe the route to the work area, not just the area itself.

Mention outdoor furniture, planters, equipment and anything delicate beside the surfaces. Ask what needs moving and who will move it. These details belong in the plan before an appointment, particularly if heavy items are involved.

Put your priorities in order.

If the patio is the main reason for the request and the driveway is optional, say so. That gives the quote a useful starting point and makes it easier to discuss the scope.

Ask about any marks you particularly want removed. Some staining or surface wear can remain after cleaning, so it is better to discuss expectations while the work is being assessed.

For a phased job, explain your first priority and ask for the remaining areas to be identified clearly. That makes it easier to decide which work you want to proceed with, without assuming every surface is included.

What to send with your request.

You can keep the first message short. Include your town, the areas on your list, any obvious marks or damage, and the access notes. Photos can help identify the surfaces, but do not replace an assessment.

If interior or exterior windows are also on the list, say so. Glass cleaning and washing the surfaces around it should be identified as their own parts of the scope.

Common questions

Is house washing the same as pressure washing?

The terms describe different parts of exterior cleaning. Beam’s assesses the surface and uses soft washing for siding rather than treating every material like hard paving. Ask which method is proposed for each area.

Can I include a driveway and patio in one request?

Yes. Name them separately, add any access notes, and say which is the priority. The written quote should make the agreed areas clear.

Will washing make every surface look new?

No cleaning should be assumed to reverse wear or remove every stain. Point out marks, coatings and damaged areas during the assessment so expectations can be discussed first.
