Why we scrape by hand instead of blasting
Moss holds moisture against your shingles, and shingles do not like that. The fix is not pressure washing the roof, which can strip granules off asphalt shingles and shorten their life. We remove moss by hand with gentle scraping, then apply a treatment to discourage it from growing back.
You will find plenty of home remedies online, Dawn soap, bleach, vinegar. Some of them do kill moss. The trouble is what they do on the way down: runoff into your plants, streaks on the siding, and a slippery roof under your feet while you apply them. If you try one, be careful. If you would rather not be on the roof at all, that is what we are for.
When to deal with moss
The best time to treat moss is when it is actively growing, which in the Okanagan means the cooler wet months, fall through spring. Summer moss goes dormant and shrugs treatments off.
