Why are my gutters overflowing?

“The gutters overflow” is a useful starting point. A few more details can make the next conversation much clearer. Keep your observations to what you can comfortably see from the ground.

The short version

An overflow needs a closer look at the gutter and downspout, not a guess from the driveway. Note where water escapes, whether the issue repeats, and any visible loose sections; a clean will not correct every drainage or repair problem.

Follow the water from the ground.

Gutters, also called eavestroughs, collect runoff at the roof edge. Downspouts carry that water onward. If water spills somewhere unexpected, the useful question is where its path is interrupted.

Debris in a gutter or at an outlet is one possibility to assess. A leak at a joint, a visibly sagging section or a detached part is a different observation. You can report what you see without deciding which problem is responsible.

Name the spot, rather than guessing the cause.

Does water come over the edge above the front door, near a corner, or along the back of the house? Use those landmarks when you describe it. You don’t need to diagnose a blockage or decide whether something needs repairing.

If you already have a photo or short video showing the issue, include it with your request. A clear description from ground level is enough to start; there is no need to climb up for a better picture.

Tell us what happened and when.

A note about when you noticed the problem helps put the request in context. Describe what you saw rather than what you think must be happening inside the gutter.

  • Which side of the home or which doorway is affected?
  • Was it a single spot or several sections?
  • Is there a nearby downspout you can identify?
  • Is access restricted by a gate, deck or planting?

What should a gutter-cleaning quote make clear?

Ask whether the work includes clearing the gutter channel, flushing the downspouts, removing the collected debris and explaining what was found. If the outside faces look stained, raise that separately: washing the visible exterior and clearing the inside are different tasks.

Beam’s gutter scope includes downspout flushing, debris removal and completion photos. Exterior brightening is discussed as an add-on. The photo lets you see work that is otherwise hard to inspect from ground level.

Plan around debris, not just a calendar date.

For Okanagan properties with nearby trees, include a note about leaves or needles collecting around the roofline. A home with overhanging branches and a home on an open lot may not need the same attention at the same time.

CMHC’s archived fall-maintenance checklist includes clearing leaves from eavestroughs and checking downspout drainage. Use autumn as a reminder to assess your home, then agree on timing around the conditions you actually see. If an overflow is already happening, mention that when you enquire.

Keep cleaning and repair questions separate.

If you can see a loose section, a leak at a joint or something that looks damaged, mention that too. Ask what the proposed work will address before booking; clearing debris should not be treated as a promise to fix every gutter problem.

If the problem continues after debris is cleared, ask what needs investigating next. Describe visible changes or repeat overflow rather than assuming another clean is the answer. A useful request separates the observation, access and work you want assessed.

Common questions

Will gutter cleaning fix an overflow?

It can address accumulated debris and blocked flow, but it is not a repair guarantee. Leaks, loose sections or other drainage issues may need a different assessment.

Are gutters and eavestroughs the same thing?

Yes. Eavestrough is another name for the channel along the roof edge. The downspout is the pipe carrying water away from that channel.

Do I need to get on a ladder for a quote photo?

No. Describe the spot from the ground or include a photo you can take without climbing. Point out the side of the house and a nearby landmark such as a doorway.
